‘Gasland’ director and film crew arrested over trying to film fracking hearing
In a stunning break with First Amendment policy, House Republicans directed Capitol Hill police to detain a highly regarded documentary crew that was attempting to film a Wednesday hearing on a controversial natural gas procurement practice. Initial reports from sources suggested that an ABC News camera was also prevented from taping the hearing; ABC has since denied that they sent a crew to the hearing.

Peruvian authorities say they are struggling to keep outsiders away from a clan of previously isolated Amazon Indians who began appearing on the banks of a jungle river popular with environmental tourists last year.

Actress in PETA advert against fur
Hollywood actress Penelope Cruz is the latest star to appear on a billboard as part of PETA’s ongoing anti-fur campaign. The 37-year-old actress condemns the use of animal fur for clothing in a billboard ad that went up Wednesday in New York’s garment district near Penn Station. The unveiling comes just ahead of New York Fashion Week, which begins on Feb. 9.

Monsanto to be charged with biopiracy in India
The U.S.-based agribusiness giant Monsanto has been accused of biopiracy in India, where the government is planning to charge the company with violating the country’s biodiversity laws over a genetically modified version of eggplant. In doing so, India has placed itself at the focal point of the movement to challenge genetically modified crops, which opponents say are destroying traditional crops and threatening farmers’ livelihoods.
