This week has seen Green MP Caroline Lucas in court in Brighton following her arrest last August when she sat in solidarity with the other anti-fracking protesters outside energy firm Cuadrilla’s exploratory site near Balcombe, Sussex.
Along with four other defendants she has been making clear that their peaceful action was essential. In a statement they read to the crowds of supporters outside the court they said, “Balcombe is the start of a major struggle over the search and exploitation of yet more fossil fuels…The latest science suggests that as much as 80% of known fossil fuel reserves must stay in the ground if we are to have any hope of avoiding dangerous climate change.”
