Australian activists fighting to stop the super trawler fishing in Bass Strait say they expect the fight will spread nationally as they seek to increase pressure on the Federal Government to refuse the boat vital permits.
As the MV Margiris heads towards Devonport, the coalition of conservation and fishing groups opposing plans for it to take 18,000 tonnes of mackerel and red bait say the outcry from Tasmania will be soon picked up around the nation’s southern seaboard.
Two petitions against the ship have already attracted nearly 20,000 signatures and there is talk of a “tinnie blockade” of Devonport when the ship arrives.
